Nothing like a barrel-aged cider and grilled cheese for lunch to put you in a good mood. And the view at Renaissance in Port Angeles, WA, is one that I hated to walk away from. Seriously, check out this view again!
Renaissance’s breads, cheeses, produce, and libations are all sourced with the vision of being a “100 mile” cafe. Crystie at Finnriver had suggested I get a grilled cheese and I was not disappointed. I enjoyed a version with Mt. Townsend Creamery Camp Fire (an alder/applewood smoked Jack) plus apples on cinnamon swirl bread. It paired beautifully with the Red Barn Fire Barrel cider (aged in bourbon barrels). Honestly, it was one of the finest food and beverage matches I’ve had in a while. And I would be remiss if I did not mention the excellent carrot salad that came with the sandwich. It had onion, cranberry, hazelnut, and a few other things I neglected to notice as I was too busy gazing out the window and letting my thoughts wander.
I will also admit being really into the bamboo fork/spoon. So much more functional than the dreaded spork. Regretting I did not ask if they were for sale.
I returned to Finnriver even more grateful for my time here after visiting some of the farm’s “neighbors” on the Olympic Peninsula. It’s very encouraging to feel and experience a real sense of community, goodwill, and support among the people making and serving diverse and delicious eats and drinks.
Simple, rustic and local. All with a view! Enjoy I know I would. GREG
Greg,
It was lovely and idyllic. I’ll have to come back when it’s warm and I can sit outside.
