If you are interested in supporting LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered, and Questioning) causes, there is now a sparkling wine worthy of your time and your Champagne flute. Égalité is the first wine to come out in support of not only the LGBTQ community, but also to celebrate recent victories in marriage equality around the country. Was I interested in receiving a sample? Hell yeah! Marriage equality and sparkling wine are two things I feel very strongly about.
As Darren Restivo, one of the principals of Biagio Cru & Estate Wines (the company that created and imports the wine) explained, “With same-sex marriage now legal in states from Maine to New York and Iowa to Washington, this is a time to recognize the hard-earned progress that has been made in pursuit of Equality.” The launch of Égalité earlier this month was also celebrated with a $1000 donation to each of these organizations:
So what’s this sparkling wine all about? And how does it taste? Égalité is a Cremant de Bourgogne, so all the grapes are coming from France’s Burgundy region; it’s a blend of 45% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay, 20% Gamay, and 5% Aligote. I am happy to report this is not one of those cause wines you choke down for altruistic reasons while sacrificing quality and flavor. It’s a very fine sparkling wine with a touch of toasty richness. I will not quibble with the suggested retail price of $24.
Égalité will also be donating proceeds from sales to LGBTQ causes. They are taking suggestions for which non-profits on Facebook and Twitter, and will put those recommendations to a vote. So chime in!
