D-G makes some seriously non-clowny Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, and Zinfandel. I was skeptical about the Syrah and Zin, especially since this is the Russian River…not known for making both Pinot and Syrah, let alone Zinfandel. But this is a great example of how each wine region can have varied terrain, elevation, and weather that allows all kinds of grapes to achieve ripeness. None of the wines are overly oaked or boozy. The Pinot Noir, especially the Devil’s Gulch, is very elegant and pretty. The Syrah from the 2000 vintage was drinking beautifully. And the Zin was one of the most restrained I have ever had, yet still retains the classic explosive berry-ness that is Zin. And the Chard was nice, too; it pairs nicely with food.. I enjoyed the entire range of wines, which in my humble (and finicky) opinion is quite an achievement. Bravo!
