This extraordinary Cabernet Sauvignon, from a vintage that must have been remarkable in Monterey (Durney Vineyards also made a terrific 1985 Cabernet Sauvignon), possessed a huge, sweet, cedary, cassis, smoky, oaky nose, great flavor intensity, as well as superb ripeness, a multi-layered, fabulous, concentrated personality, and a finish that lasted nearly a minute. The acidity was sound and well-integrated, and the tannins were noticeable, but ripe and sweet. This exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon could easily pass for a first-growth Pauillac from a great vintage. Interestingly, the bell pepper, vegetal aspect I have noticed in other Smith and Hook Cabernets was not present. This fully mature, amazing wine should continue to drink well for 10+ years.
