I had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to taste all the first growth Bordeauxs from 1999. They are:
Chateau Haut-Brion
Chateau Margaux
Chateau Latour
Chateau Mouton-Rothschild
Chateau Lafite-Rothschild
Chateau Cheval Blanc
All these wines range in price from $175-$250!
What blew me away was how approachable and elegant these wines were, with nice acidity. I thought they would me monsters, with mouth-searing tannins. I also thought that they would not be drinkable after only 6 years, but they certainly are (although we did double-decant them about 4 hours before tasting).
So I am now ready to admit that the great wines of Bordeaux are truly amazing wines. But Burgundy still rules.
