Got to taste some mind-blowing Napa Cabs. Makes you realize that Napa can compete with Bordeaux; they can be in the same room together.
2002 Chateau Montelena
2002 Duckhorn Estate
2002 Far Niente
2002 Insignia
2002 Camus Special Selection
I have to say that I thought the Camus and the Duckhorn would just be fruit bombs. But the real test is when I drank these wines two days after being opened. They were awesome. I think the Far Niente was the surprise; it was drinking beautifully. The Camus even started showing some earthy characteristics. But the Insignia was the best. Even though Joseph Phelps makes 15,000 (!) cases a year of this wine, they are doing a great job. (Note that Rothschild, Haut-Brion, etc. all make 10,000+ cases too.)
Also got to taste Verite wines from Sonoma. Very elegant, Bordeaux-style wines.
So in case you think I am just an old world snob, I tip my hat (and glass) to Napa.
