Lunch With (The Wines of) Guigal

Guigal

Guigal has its famous, pricey wines like the La Las but I was at lunch today with a rep from ExCellars revisiting the more humble Cotes du Rhones. The rosé, white, and red were really impressive. The 2009 pink was lovely, with all kinds of strawberry and watermelon flavors but bone-dry. The white contained a surprising amount of Viognier (over 50%); with the rising popularity of this grape in Washington, I’d tell people to buy this as it has a nice chunk of Viognier without being heavy or oaky. The most surprising thing about the red is the current vintage: 2006. I already have 2009 Cotes du Rhone in the store; it’s great that Guigal holds back this wine as it is really integrated and wonderful to drink.

I’m always impressed with wineries whose more entry-level offerings have the same amount of consideration as the fancy-pants $$$ wines. The Guigal Cotes du Rhones are widely available and are a new go-to for me.
