That’s what trying to find a good Pinot Noir under 10 bucks feels like, a quest for the impossible. I finally found one and it is from Chile. The 2007 Cono Sur Pinot Noir is available for 9 bucks and I think it is great because at this price it:
1) Tastes like Pinot Noir
2) Has some depth
3) Has some complexity
So many bargain Pinot Noirs taste like they are blended with a big chunk of God-knows-what and, at best, are just sweet, light, chugging wine. Which I don’t have a problem with; you’ll be pouring me a second glass. But when you can get a Pinot Noir that shames a lot of Pinot from California, Oregon, and, yes, even Burgundy that is double or triple the price, you have to take notice.
This is a truly outrageous wine bargain. They also make a great Carmenere, Sauvignon Blanc, and Viognier that are the same price and nearly as impressive.
The Cono Sur Flash website, however, is driving me crazy.
I snagged a couple bottles of this at Sam’s. Some employee scribbled a barely legible note that you rarely find a grape of this quality at such a low price.
Chugged one of them last night and it certainly stood out compared to some forgettable pinot’s I drank recently. Delicious!
