The Mayor of Mencia, The Baron of Bierzo

Man, I love Bierzo! I am enjoying the 2002 Castro Ventosa Valtuille. About a month ago I was tasting a wine blind that I was 1000% sure was a Cru Beaujolais. Wrong! It was the Bierzo! After being open for an hour it’s a dead ringer for a CB. Although a little more concentrated. This is a wine that can age beautifully as well. I’m still kicking myself for not buying more 2001 Cepas Viejas from Dominio de Tares.

I would take the best wines of Bierzo hands-down over any other red wines from Spain. They are truly special.

Update: Much more concentrated than a CB. 14% alcohol. This is a much bigger wine than the last bottle I tasted, more like the first time I had it when it was pretty bold and tannic.

I actually think this would be a perfect wine for a grilled steak with salt, pepper, and nothing else! It has nice minerality and acidity and very pure fruit; step aside, Napa Cabs! Yes, steak, yum. I think this wine that will be drinking at it’s peak in five years. Bravo! Very impressive.
