What is the difference between a white wine glass and a red wine glass?

I’ve been answering wine queries on the question and answer site Quora. I’ll share some of the most interesting questions I’ve been asked and, of course, my answers. I limit myself to spending a couple minutes on each response, not doing any research or “cheating.” I rely on my experience and opinion, which is probably not a bad way handle most things.

Question: What is the difference between a white wine glass and a red wine glass?

White wine glass, red wine glass. What's the difference?

Answer: Not much. I think the only reason there are red wine and white wine glasses is for stemware companies to sell more wine glasses you don’t need. It’s a little ridiculous, all the kinds of wineglasses. Normally red wine glasses have a bigger bowl because the wines are “bigger.” As long as you have a nice wine glass with a good-sized bowl, that’s all that matters. Big enough to swirl the wine and not make it too full. Just find one you really like, size-wise (kind of like finding the right chef knife) and use it for reds and whites.
