Drinking the 2007 Archery Summit Pinot Noir Premier Cuvée at The Inn at Langley was not only pleasurable, but thought-provoking. The 2007 vintage in Oregon for Pinot Noir was characterized in great part by the large amounts of rain towards the end of the grape-growing season. The critical reports at the time were not encouraging.
Some of these 2007 Pinot Noirs, however, are drinking fantastically well now. Like the aforementioned Archery Summit, which was gorgeous. Wonderfully rich and balanced. Of course receiving significant amounts of rain close to harvest is fraught with potential for rotten fruit and thin, insipid wines. But for those wineries who got it right, the results are remarkable.
With wine vintages, there are always exceptions to the rule. It’s OK to put away the vintage chart/graph/report. Instead, talk to a winemaker or wine shop employee who has experience tasting the best (and worst) of a vintage. You can’t have a conversation with a chart.
I highly recommend reading the 2007 vintage report from Amalie Robert Estate, which not only goes into great detail, but also bluntly critiques some of the generalizations about the vintage.
