Try Me With Ham

For Easter I had a big white wine extravaganza. 2003 Poet’s Leap Riesling (WA)2002 Fichet Borgogne Blanc (FR)2002 Eyrie Pinot Gris (OR) The Washington State Riesling was pretty decent. A little bit of residual sugar, OK acidity. Very easy drinking but for 20 bucks I would just but a German riesling in the future. The [More]

Cheap Washington Wine

…is in my tummy!!!  I love this red, made by K vintners. The label is cool. I think blending is where it’s at with new world wines. The blend gives it something to break up the boringness of single varietal wines. It’s under ten bucks, too!!! Would be a great cheeseburger wine.

Pricey Washington Syrah

So in honor of living in Seattle, I thought I would broaden my horizons and try some of the local juice. I bought a Syrah from Walla Walla, the hot/boutique-y wine region. It was in the 35-30 dollar range and it is hard to find it much cheaper. It was OK. It had red fruit [More]

The Key Wine

I’ve always loved this Spanish Tempranillo by Finca Antigua. I call it “The Key Wine” because there is a picture of a key on the label. (Pretty clever, huh?) I was at Tango last night for 1/2 price wine night and the woman I was with said she wanted to drink a dry red. So [More]

Lively Spanish White

I have been really impressed with Spanish white wines; they are cheap and refreshing. Just drank a 2003 Rueda Blanco by Basa. It had a very tangy, almost candy apple (or Jolly Rancher) initial taste, then a surprisingly rich and mouthfilling finish (though not long lasting). It was great with some salmon I had with [More]

German Riesling…Stunning

Posted on: March 2nd, 2005 by

Don’t be Sarr-y, get the Van Volxem.  Although J.J Christoffel Erben is a great producer, the real start of yesterday’s Rielsing shoot-out was the Van Volxem. This was one of the most impressive white wines I have drank in a long time. Crazy, shimmering acidity, followed by a hint of sweetness, then more acidity. Delicate [More]

Power Wine, Strong Like Bull

Posted on: February 25th, 2005 by

Last night I drank a very cheap, very big, fruity, tannic wine from the Costieres de Nimes. It’s not a well-known region, but like the rest of the Languedoc, its catching up because the land is cheap(er) then say, the Rhone or Burgundy. What surprised me about this wine is that it is 100% syrah…usually [More]
