A Cider for Beer Lovers on a Sunny Day at Finnriver Farm

I have a secret to tell you about Finnriver Farm in January. It’s not all gray clouds and rain. Sometimes the sun makes an appearance. (Maybe a brief appearance, but let’s enjoy this moment in the sun, ok?) And in dramatic fashion. There is nothing more satisfying then emerging from your cabin in the morning… [More]

Winter Blueberry Maintenance at Finnriver Farm

On a late August visit to Finnriver Farm and Cidery I viewed an abundance of blueberries. But when winter comes, a lot of work goes into making sure a bounty of berries are available in the warmer months. Here’s what blueberry bushes look like in the winter: Though barren, I actually find them quite attractive. [More]

A Spirited Day at Finnriver Farm and a Wine to Match

My first day at Finnriver Farm was full of hard work (well, for a soft-handed city boy) but very rewarding. I’m already fond of the chickens and their unbridled enthusiasm for being fed. And during morning egg collection (some of them still warm), I was surprised at how many I gathered even though winter production [More]

A Month at Finnriver Farm and Cidery

I’m rolling up my sleeves to spend most of my January at Finnriver Farm and Cidery. After numerous visits out to the farm, located in Chimacum on Washington State’s Olympic Peninsula, I have become quite attached to the place and the people. I’m looking forward to helping out with the day-to-day operations of the farm [More]

Wines I Tasted Yesterday

2008 Nora AlbariƱo (Spain): I recall previous vintages of this wine having a bit too much RS for my liking, but this was really racy. 2008 Las Brisas (Spain): Verdejo/Viura/Sauvignon Blanc blend. This is the kind of $10ish white from Spain that I love; bracing and gulpable. 2007 Corvidae “Rook” (Columbia Valley, WA/OR): This line [More]

2004 Hogue Johannisberg Riesling

2004 Hogue Johannisberg RieslingOriginally uploaded by jamesonf Wow. One of the most unexpected and surprising wines I have tasted in a long time. Maybe ever. This was the first vintage in screwcap for the Hogue Johannisberg Riesling. It drank like a great, dry Aussie Riesling with petrol and lime notes. Somehow the sugar had faded, [More]

1993 Hogue Reserve Merlot

1993 Hogue Reserve MerlotOriginally uploaded by jamesonf Tasted (drank) at the winery. Fantastic; reminded me of a well-aged, classified-growth Bordeaux. The alcohol level is much more moderate than you see today out of most top reds from Washington and California. Probably the second-best Washington red I have had.

Cadence Coda

The 2005 Coda is 80% Cab Franc, 20% Cab Sauv. Once again, Cadence is making the best wines in Washington. And by best I mean balanced, non-boozy, un-oaky. They have plush Washington fruit and a lot of character. I am lobbying for a 100% Cab Franc. This wine drank great on day two. I think [More]
